Austrian Pirate Party Launched Advertising Campaign on YouPorn

The local Pirate Party is reported to be running a very uncommon advertising campaign on one of the largest online porn websites. The Party uses an image of the Minister of the Interior to warn YouPorn visitors that they might soon be being watched. In such a way, they reference to a new mass surveillance proposal in the country.

Other than promoting copyright reform, Pirate Parties all over the world also defend online privacy, and Austria is not an exception. The problem is that the local politicians are trying to increase state surveillance by pushing the new State Protection Act, which will increase surveillance.

The elections in the Linz region are just a few days away, and the Pirate Party decided to advertise their policy though an unusual way for most political parties. The Austrian party opted for YouPorn as their prime adverting platform. It is clear that people normally prefer not to be snooped on while they’re viewing porn services. But if they visit YouPorn, they now can’t escape the prying eyes of Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Austria’s Minister of the Interior from the banner ad, saying “Johanna wants to watch you!”

The ads are shown in German and targeted at Austrians, who are, of course, shocked to see the Minister snooping on their private moments. We can’t deny that that is exactly the effect the Pirate Party needed. By clicking on the banner, Internet users are directed to a dedicated campaign website with more details and tips against surveillance.

Later, the Pirates are going to continue their advertising efforts on porn sites and have already launched a crowdfunding campaign for the next round of ads.
